“As Long As You’re Here” by Moyka: A Captivating Finale for Netflix’s “Young Royals”

Norwegian electro-pop star Moyka takes center stage in the emotional climax of Netflix's hit teen drama "Young Royals" with a specially crafted remix of her song "As Long As You're Here."

The highly anticipated season 3 finale, premiered on March 18th, promises a powerful conclusion underscored by Moyka’s evocative sound. Originally released in her 2021 debut album, “As Long As You’re Here” gets a “Young Royals Remix” tailored to perfectly capture the series’ themes.

Known for her ability to infuse music with depth and emotion, Moyka’s remix perfectly complements the show’s exploration of LGBTQ+ identity, family dynamics, and self-acceptance and self-love. Having a sneak peek at the finale, Moyka meticulously fine-tuned the remix to resonate with the characters’ journeys and the intensity of their emotions. The result is a powerful musical moment that lingers long after the credits roll.

In an exclusive interview with Mundo Películas, Moyka spoke about her collaboration with Netflix for the series “Young Royals”.

How did this collaboration between you and Netflix come about?

The music directors of the series reached out and said they wanted to use some of my songs in the series, and tested out a bunch of different options and saw what would fit the best. They also eventually tried “As Long as You’re Here” for the final scene and said it would fit perfectly if we were able to change the form so it would fit the picture and give it some more power, which resulted in this new remix of the song.

It’s such a dream come true to get the opportunity to breathe new life into this song which was originally just supposed to be a moody opening track of my first album. Now it’s a grand finale, and I couldn’t be more excited about it!

They also decided to go with “Lonely” in episode five and “Perfect Movie Scene” in the start of the final episode, both songs are from my latest album “Movies, Cars & Heartbreak”. It’s such an honour to me that the final episode both opens and closes with my music!

How was the process of adapting your song for the series?

We agreed that we would work the song around the final scene, and got sent the scene itself, timecodes and credits so we watched the ending over and over while working on the remix. I’m not gonna spoil
anything in case you haven’t watched it yet, but I remember crying a lot.
It’s a really touching story.
I produced the song together with Eirik Hella, which has been my main collaborator on the majority of my artistic projects – all the way from the start. We tried out so many different directions, because we knew we wanted to give the track more energy and power. It can be a bit tricky when the original song has been out for so long and have had a life of its own for some time, but I think it turned out great!

What is the social importance of a series like this, which depicts a gay romance and makes visible something that is still illegal or frowned upon in many places?

It’s incredibly important to me! It’s a human right to be able to love who we love and I think this series touches onto so many aspects of what it means to be queer, and of course what it means to be young and in love and give someone your everything – highs and lows and all in between. There’s also many important questions that are being raised through the show – including how problematic and scary it can be to be openly gay in the social positions you’re in. Even in a country which is quite liberal and “safe” to be gay or belong to the LGBTQ+ community in, there’s still violence and there’s still people fighting against our rights to be ourselves and express love. So the fight for equality is far from over – not here, not anywhere. I think its so cool and important that this show has reached so far outside of its Swedish borders, and really brought more light to the conversation.

What does it mean for you as an artist to be featured in a series of one of the most important streaming platforms?

It’s such an honour to be a part of such an incredibly impactful series like this. It’s a unique story that is being told, and yet I think a lot of people can relate to multiple characters of the show – and I can see that in how people react to the series and how they react to the ending. I see it in the messages people send me, I see it in the reaction videos they’re posting, it’s so beautiful! It means a lot that the ‘Young Royals’ team felt that my music would fit so perfectly to multiple scenes in the series, I honestly almost can’t believe it even happened. I’m still in shock!

What was your reaction when you wacthed the final episode with your music playing?

I cried so much the first times I saw the final scene! Working the song around this scene was so hard the first few times in the studio because I would just get so emotional and cry, haha! I was just so moved by the story, the characters development, and the love the characters for one another and how they’re able to express it, not only in the final scene, but I would say the whole show. I won’t go into detail, because I don’t want to spoil anything. I recommend you watch it, and you’ll understand what I mean.I
